Unlike its counterparts, PASSCARD introduces a unique "pass" mechanic that significantly alters strategic gameplay. Each round begins with players passing a select number of cards to another player, injecting an element of both cooperation and calculated sabotage. This passing phase becomes the cornerstone of PASSCARD, allowing players to bolster their own hands while simultaneously weakening their opponents'.

The game unfolds over several rounds, each consisting of a passing phase followed by a trick-taking phase. Before each round commences, players are dealt a hand of cards. The number of cards passed varies depending on the specific ruleset being used, often correlating with the total number of players. For example, in a four-player game, players might pass three cards. The direction of the pass also rotates each round, cycling through passing left, right, across, or holding (no passing). This dynamic pass direction prevents static strategies and forces players to constantly adapt.

The passing phase is a crucial moment of strategic decision-making. Players must carefully evaluate their hand, anticipating the potential tricks they can win or lose. Passing high-value penalty cards is a common tactic, aiming to burden opponents and keep one's own point total low. However, passing strategically valuable cards, such as high-ranking cards in a desired suit, can also be a viable strategy to set up a teammate or disrupt an opponent's planned plays. This delicate balance between offense and defense is what makes the passing phase so engaging.

Once the passing phase concludes, players receive the cards passed to them, completing their hand for the round. The trick-taking phase then begins, following standard trick-taking conventions. One player leads a card, and the other players must follow suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a trump card if one exists in the specific ruleset being used. The highest card of the led suit, or the highest trump card if played, wins the trick. The player who wins the trick then leads the next card.

The objective of PASSCARD is to minimize the number of penalty points accumulated. Penalty points are typically assigned to specific cards, often high-ranking cards or cards of a particular suit. The Queen of Spades, a notorious penalty card in many trick-taking games, often carries a hefty penalty in PASSCARD as well. Other cards, such as hearts, might also carry penalty points. The specific point values assigned to these cards can vary depending on the chosen ruleset.

As the rounds progress, players tally their penalty points. The game continues until a predetermined point threshold is reached, often a specific number of points or a certain number of rounds played. The player with the lowest total penalty points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
