Each player is dealt nine cards, and one player selects the trump suit OR one of two different game modes:

Top-Down: 6 is the lowest card, and Ace is the highest

Bottom-Up: 6 is the highest card, and Ace is the lowest

After selecting a game mode, players can declare a "Weis" if they have specific card combinations in their hand, earning extra points.

The game proceeds counter-clockwise, with card values depending on the chosen Jass game method.

Important rules include:

Follow suit, except when

You can always trump

You cannot undertrump

If you can't follow suit, you may play any card but not undertrump

Trump Jack (Puur) has no suit obligation

With these basic rules, you can start playing Jassen!

Jassen: A Swiss Card Game of Skill and Strategy

Jassen, a beloved Swiss card game, has captivated generations with its intricate rules and strategic gameplay. Played with a deck of 36 cards, Jassen combines elements of trick-taking, bidding, and trump determination to create a game of both skill and luck.

Gameplay Overview

Jassen is typically played by four players in two partnerships, with players sitting opposite their partners. The goal of the game is to win the most tricks and accumulate points based on the value of the cards captured. Each trick consists of four cards, one played by each player in turn. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump wins.

Bidding and Trump Determination

Before the start of each hand, players bid on the number of tricks they believe their team can win. The highest bidder becomes the declarer and chooses the trump suit for that hand. The declarer's partner becomes the second player, while the remaining two players form the opposing team.

Trick-Taking and Scoring

The player to the left of the declarer leads the first trick by playing a card. The other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot, they may play a trump card or discard a card of any other suit. The player who wins the trick collects the cards and leads the next trick.

Points are awarded based on the value of the cards captured in each trick. Picture cards (Jacks, Queens, and Kings) are worth 2 points each, while Aces are worth 11 points. All other cards are worth their face value.

Special Cards and Rules

Jassen features several special cards and rules that add depth and strategy to the game:

* The Wyss (Joker): A card that can be played at any time, taking the value of any card it replaces.

* Trump Jacks: Jack cards of the trump suit are worth 20 points each.

* Trump Ace: The Ace of the trump suit is known as the "Nel" and is worth 5 points.

* Match: If a player captures two cards of the same rank, they receive a bonus of 5 points.

Winning the Game

The game continues until one team reaches or exceeds the target score, which is typically 1000 points. The team with the highest total score wins the game.

Variations

Jassen has numerous regional variations, each with its own unique rules and scoring system. Some popular variations include:

* French Jass: Played with a 32-card deck and features a different trump determination system.

* Schieber Jass: A variation where players can "shoot the moon" by winning all the tricks in a hand.

* Schafkopf Jass: A three-player variation where players bid on the number of points they will score.

Conclusion

Jassen is a challenging and rewarding card game that has stood the test of time in Switzerland. Its combination of skill, strategy, and luck makes it an engaging and enjoyable game for players of all ages. With its rich history and diverse variations, Jassen continues to captivate and entertain card enthusiasts across the country.
