ChessChess is a two-player strategy board game played on an 8x8 checkered board with 64 squares of alternating colors. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which occurs when the king is under immediate threat of capture (check) and there is no legal move to remove that threat.
The pieces move in the following ways:
* King: One square in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
* Queen: Any number of squares along a rank (row), file (column), or diagonal.
* Rook: Any number of squares along a rank or file.
* Bishop: Any number of squares diagonally, staying on the same color.
* Knight: An "L" pattern - two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. Knights can jump over other pieces.
* Pawn: One square forward, except for the initial move where it can move two squares forward. Captures diagonally forward one square.
Players take turns moving one piece at a time. White always moves first. If a piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent's piece, the opponent's piece is captured and removed from the board.
Special moves include:
* Castling: A move involving the king and one of the rooks, where the king moves two squares towards a rook, which then hops over the king.
* En passant: A pawn capture that can occur under specific conditions when a pawn advances two squares from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn.
* Promotion: If a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (queen, rook, bishop, or knight) of the same color.
The game can end in several ways:
* Checkmate: When the king is in check and there is no legal move to escape.
* Stalemate: When the player whose turn it is to move has no legal moves, but their king is not in check.
* Draw: By agreement between the players, repetition of moves, or insufficient material to checkmate.
Chess is a complex and challenging game that requires strategic thinking, tactical calculation, and positional understanding. It is played by millions of people worldwide and is considered one of the oldest and most popular strategy games in history.
