Objective:

The objective of Codenames is to be the first team to identify and contact all of their agents hidden within a grid of words.

Gameplay:

The game is played with two teams, each with a team leader (the "Spymaster") and several field agents. The Spymaster knows the location of their team's agents, while the field agents only know the words visible on the grid.

The Spymaster gives one-word clues to their team, which can refer to multiple words on the grid. For example, they might say "animals" to indicate that two of their agents are represented by words like "dog" and "cat."

The field agents then try to identify and select the words that correspond to their team's agents. However, they must be careful not to select words that belong to the other team or the "assassin," a word that will immediately end their turn.

Special Rules:

* Single-word clues: Spymasters can only give single-word clues. They cannot use phrases or gestures.

* Number of words: The number of words in a clue indicates the number of agents on the grid that the clue refers to.

* First turn: The first team to make contact with all of their agents wins the game.

* Assassin: If a field agent selects the assassin word, their turn immediately ends and their team loses.

Strategy:

* Communication: Spymasters and field agents must communicate effectively to identify and select the correct words.

* Deduction: Field agents must use logical reasoning to determine which words are likely to be their agents.

* Bluffing: Spymasters can bluff by giving clues that intentionally mislead the other team.

* Patience: Codenames is a game of patience and strategy. Teams should take their time to carefully consider their clues and selections.

Variations:

There are several variations of Codenames, including:

* Codenames: Pictures: Instead of words, the grid contains pictures.

* Codenames: Duet: A cooperative version where both players work together as Spymasters.

* Codenames: Disney: A version featuring characters and locations from the Disney universe.
