The Ugaritic alphabet, also known as the Ras Shamra alphabet, was an abjad script used to write the Ugaritic language, an extinct Northwest Semitic language spoken in the ancient city of Ugarit in northern Syria. The alphabet was developed around the 14th century BCE and was used for both monumental inscriptions and everyday writing on clay tablets.
The Ugaritic alphabet consisted of 30 cuneiform signs, each representing a consonant or a vowel. The signs were written in a left-to-right direction, and there was no distinction between upper and lower case letters. The alphabet also included a number of logograms, which were signs that represented entire words or phrases.
The Ugaritic alphabet was used to write a variety of texts, including religious texts, administrative documents, and literary works. The most famous Ugaritic text is the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is one of the oldest known works of literature in the world.
The Ugaritic alphabet was eventually replaced by the Phoenician alphabet, which was the ancestor of the modern Latin alphabet. However, the Ugaritic alphabet remains an important source of information about the history and culture of the ancient Near East.
