Gameplay Overview

Spades is a trick-taking card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The objective of the game is to be the first team to reach 500 points by winning tricks and bidding accurately. The game is played in teams of two, with partners sitting opposite each other.

Bidding

Before each round, each player bids on the number of tricks they believe their team will win. The bids are then added together, and the team with the highest bid becomes the "declaring" team. The declaring team must then try to win at least the number of tricks they bid, while the other team tries to prevent them from doing so.

Trick-Taking

The game is played in a series of tricks. Each player plays one card at a time, and the highest card of the suit led wins the trick. Spades are always trump, meaning they can beat any other card.

Scoring

If the declaring team wins the number of tricks they bid, they receive 10 points for each trick bid. If they win more tricks than they bid, they receive an additional 1 point for each extra trick. If they fail to win the number of tricks they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they missed.

Nil Bidding

A player can also bid "nil," which means they believe they will not win any tricks. If they are successful, they receive 100 points. If they fail, they lose 100 points.

Blind Nil Bidding

A player can also bid "blind nil," which means they bid nil without looking at their cards. If they are successful, they receive 200 points. If they fail, they lose 200 points.

Winning the Game

The first team to reach 500 points wins the game.
