Odia (Oriya) Calendar

The Odia calendar, also known as the Oriya calendar, is a traditional lunisolar calendar used in the Indian state of Odisha. It is based on the ancient Hindu calendar system and is closely related to the Bengali calendar. The Odia calendar is used for both religious and secular purposes, including determining the dates of festivals, holidays, and agricultural activities.

Structure

The Odia calendar is divided into 12 months, each of which has 30 or 31 days. The months are named after the corresponding zodiac signs, with the first month starting in mid-April. The calendar also includes an intercalary month, known as Malamas, which is added every three years to keep the calendar in sync with the solar year.

Months

The 12 months of the Odia calendar are:

1. Baisakh (April-May)

2. Jyestha (May-June)

3. Ashadha (June-July)

4. Shravana (July-August)

5. Bhadra (August-September)

6. Aswina (September-October)

7. Kartika (October-November)

8. Margasira (November-December)

9. Pausa (December-January)

10. Magha (January-February)

11. Phalguna (February-March)

12. Chaitra (March-April)

Intercalary Month

The intercalary month, Malamas, is added to the calendar every three years after the month of Ashadha. It consists of 30 days and is used to adjust the calendar to the solar year.

Days of the Week

The Odia calendar uses the same seven days of the week as the Gregorian calendar:

1. Sunday (Dibasa)

2. Monday (Somabara)

3. Tuesday (Mangalabara)

4. Wednesday (Budhabara)

5. Thursday (Guruwara)

6. Friday (Sukrabara)

7. Saturday (Sanichara)

Eras

The Odia calendar uses the Saka era, which began in 78 AD. The current year in the Odia calendar is 1946 (as of 2023).

Festivals and Holidays

The Odia calendar is used to determine the dates of various festivals and holidays, including:

* Raja Parba (Odia New Year)

* Durga Puja

* Diwali

* Holi

* Rath Yatra

* Makar Sankranti

Agricultural Activities

The Odia calendar is also used to guide agricultural activities, such as planting, harvesting, and irrigation. The months of the calendar correspond to different seasons and weather patterns, providing farmers with an indication of the best time to perform various tasks.
